  1. GEORGE DRUMMOND-FISH (IRISHDetails

    GEORGE DRUMMOND-FISH (IRISH

    Price:
    €0
GEORGE DRUMMOND-FISH (IRISH, 1876-1938), watercolour landscape, West of Ireland coastal scene (possibly Co. Mayo), bays and inlets with sheep grazing on a rugged headland in foreground, 18 inches (46 cm) x 12 inches (30 cm) horizontal approx, signed at bottom left, framed and glazed. Note: George Drummond Fish saw service with the 6th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles at Gallipoli during WW1, as part of the 29th Brigade of the 10th (Irish) Division. There he produced numerous military paintings and sketches of the bleak landscape of the Gallipoli peninsula, including eight watercolour sketches that were used to illustrate Henry Hanna's book ''The Pals at Suvla Bay'', which recorded the exploits of the Irish Rugby Football Union volunteers of ''D'' Company of the 7th Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers during the Gallipoli campaign. Three of Drummond-Fish's watercolours were also used to illustrate Bryan Cooper's ''The 10th (Irish) Division at Gallipoli''. Watercolours of Gallipoli by Drummond-Fish are also held by the National Army Museum, London, and the Royal Irish Regiment, Ballymena. In the post-war years, Drummond-Fish painted extensively in Ireland, Wales and Scotland, specialising in remote moorland and coastal scenes which, with their rugged terrain, perhaps provided a haunting reminder of the Gallipoli landscape which he had painted during the campaign of 1915. Lot accompanied by a copy of Henry Hanna's ''The Pals at Suvla Bay'', several of the illustrations within which, also depicting bays, inlets and low brush covered hills, bear a striking resemblance to this watercolour. 2015 is the Centenary of the Gallipoli Campaign Learn More
